Anghinarea este una din cele mai vechi plante cunoscute in istoria umanitatii. Originara din Etiopia, planta medicinala a fost adusa in Europa de Sud, traversand Egiptul Antic, unde a fost consemnata in desenele vechilor civilizatii. Grecii si romanii utilizau anghinarea pentru mentinerea sanatatii ficatului si vezicii biliare. In secolul al XVI-lea, in Europa era considerata o „leguma nobila”, fiind consumata numai de catre membrii casei regale si de oamenii foarte bogati. In trecut anghinarea se utiliza datorita proprietatilor coleretice, colagoge, hepatoprotectoare, detoxifiante hepatice, hipocolesterolemiante si hipolipemiante. In scop terapeutic se utilizeaza frunzele de anghinarea, care au gust amar si se recolteaza de 3-4 ori pe an, dupa maturizare, inca din primul an, in lunile iunie-septembrie.
